Democrats pick Tom Perez to lead party against Trump, Republicans

Added: 25.02.2017 20:52 | 2 views | 0 comments

U.S. Democrats elected former Labor Secretary Tom Perez as chairman on Saturday, choosing a veteran of the Obama administration to lead the daunting task of rebuilding the party and heading the opposition to Republican President Donald Trump. Members of the Democratic National Committee, the administrative and fundraising arm of the party, picked Perez on the second round of voting after one of the most crowded and competitive party leadership elections in decades. Amid a flurry of anti-Semitic incidents in recent weeks, many American Muslims are stepping forward to support the Jewish community. The most recent effort, a fundraising campaign started by Muslim-American activists to help repair a vandalized historic Jewish cemetery, had garnered more than $65,000 donations as of Wednesday morning – more than triple the initial goal. The raised funds, which surpassed the initial goal of $20,000 within three hours, will now also be used towards supporting other vandalized Jewish centers across the country, according to organizers Linda Sarsour and Tarek El-Messidi.
