Lebanese troops attacked Islamist gunmen holed up in the historic market of the northern city of Tripoli Saturday, after deadly clashes rocked the longtime tourist attraction, an AFP correspondent reported. It was the first time since the civil war in neighbouring Syria erupted in 2011 that violence had spread to the market in Tripoli's historic centre, which is on the shortlist for possible nomination as a UNESCO world heritage site. The AFP correspondent heard shelling and heavy gunfire as the army launched its assault on the gunmen's positions. Tripoli has seen repeated clashes between Sunni militants sympathetic to the rebels in neighbouring Syria and Alawites who back the Damascus regime.

Added: 24.10.2014 22:06 | 0 views | 0 comments

Ten children and five women have been killed in Syrian government air strikes in the northern province of Aleppo, a monitoring group said Friday. The children, aged from four to 10, and women were killed Thursday "in barrel bomb strikes by regime helicopters on a home and public hall in the village of Tal Qarrah in the north of Aleppo," the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. President Bashar al-Assad's air force has carried out near-daily strikes against areas under rebel control in the northern province since last December, killing several hundred people, mostly civilians. In July, Human Rights Watch accused the regime of defying a UN Security Council resolution ordering all sides in Syria's war to stop indiscriminate attacks.

Five Lebanese army troops and a number of Islamist gunmen were wounded in a clash late Friday in a historic area of the northern city of Tripoli, a security official said. "The number of wounded soldiers has risen to five," said the official, who spoke to AFP on condition of anonymity, adding that "several gunmen have been injured, while others have been arrested." The clash that initially erupted in the souks (traditional markets) area of Lebanon's second city also extended to other areas. Ever since the war in neighbouring Syria broke out in 2011, Tripoli has been the scene of regular fighting between Sunni militants and members of Lebanon's Alawite minority.
