The PlayStation 5s SSD jump is more impressive than you might think

Added: 20.04.2019 23:18 | 5 views | 0 comments

Earlier this week, Sony surprisingly began discussing the PlayStation 5 and its hardware specs in detail. Gamers know that the next-gen console will use a Risen processor and a Navi GPU from AMD but beyond that, the PS5 will make the jump from hard drives to SSDs. Quicker loading times are the obvious benefit here but it would seem that there are other gameplay-affecting benefits that arent getting as much attention. Nowadays, gamers are used to seeing massive open-world games clocking in at sizes upwards of 100GB or in some cases, even higher. It takes time for hard drives to pull in all of this data, resulting in long loading screens but also impacting the speed at which a player can move throughout the world.

TSA writes: "Out of nowhere, Sony sat their lead console architect Mark Cerny down in a room with a journalist and had him demo and show off their next generation of PlayStation console. From what he described for yesterdays next-gen PlayStation reveal, its practically just a dream wish-list of components and system capabilities. Its got a powerful modern CPU, a next generation GPU, ray tracing technology, a ludicrously fast SSD to eliminate loading screens, and backward compatibility. While Ill be very happy to be proven wrong, this also doesnt sound like itll be a £349/$399 console."

The PS5 will include 8K support, PS4 backward capability, PSVR capability, a built-in SSD, and more. All of these features have been previously reported on by PSU and elsewhere, but this leaves me with one question: What about my live games?"
