The United Nations said there was an alarming rise in the number of refugees and asylum seekers who are fleeing violence and persecution across Central America, according to The Guardian. The UN called on the international community to rise up and help meet the "huge needs" facing the crisis. The number of those fleeing increased from only 18,000 in 2011 to almost 294,000 at the end of 2017, noting how the number grew by 58% last year alone.
